The best film stuff from the week of April 6-12

1. The Ringer’s Sean Fennessey invites Ari Aster, Barry Jenkins, Miranda July, Benny Safdie & Josh Safdie, and other filmmakers and critics on his podcast to talk about the importance of the Criterion Channel and recommend the must-watch films from the massive library.

2. Vulture’s E. Alex Jung and Alison Wilmore provide a guide to Bong Joon Ho’s films that aren’t Parasite (a very good movie).

3. David Lynch is making tiny lamps in quarantine.

4. Vulture’s Nate Jones does a fun job imagining how the Oscars might play out. (Spoiler: Sonic the Hedgehog wins best picture [jk…or am I?]).

5. I appreciated the spirit of AV Club’s roundup of the 50 most important American independent films and its inclusion of Shadows, Night of the Living Dead, Funny Ha Ha, and Moonlight but it made me question the definition/criteria of independent when films like Lost in Translation, Little Miss Sunshine, and Get Out are on the list. Is it really just a smaller than average budget? Kind of a shitty benchmark if you ask me.
