plug: Greener Grass (2019)
A smart, original satire that’s as hilarious as it is visually inventive.
Greener Grass is one of the best viewing experiences I’ve had all quarantine. Directed by and co-starring Jocelyn Deboer and Dawn Leubbe, it’s an exceptionally smart, silly, and biting satire on the painful absurdities and social terrorism of American suburbia — landing somewhere tonally between a good SNL movie and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Everything about it feels just familiar enough to be inviting, but also new and fresh in ways that defy description (turns out, that’s what happens when you let more women direct movies).
Greener Grass is every bit as much a verbal comedy as it is a visual one, though the visuals are so goddamn potent in their brashness, intensity, and bite that you’d be hard pressed to find a frame that isn’t sophisticated and hilarious. I’ll leave you with a few to show you what I mean.
